About the event

Known as El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Ángeles, this is the city’s birthplace, where the original pueblo (town) was established in 1781. The plaza area, La Placita Olvera, later became home to some of the city’s earliest landmarks, including Avila Adobe (the oldest standing residence in Los Angeles), the Firehouse Museum (the city’s first fire station), and the Sepúlveda House (a preserved Victorian-era adobe). Today, the plaza continues to serve as a gathering place for community celebrations, music, dance, and cultural events, reflecting the living traditions of Mexican and Mexican-American heritage in Los Angeles.

We will begin our trip with lunch at Luz del Día, a traditional Mexican restaurant established in 1948 that has been serving homestyle dishes for generations. Located in the historic Olvera Street marketplace, Luz del Día offers students a chance to experience authentic flavors while learning about the role food plays in preserving culture and family traditions.

Following lunch, we will visit La Plaza de Cultura y Artes, located across from La Placita Olvera. At the museum, students will engage in a self-guided exploration of exhibits that showcase Mexican-American history, culture, and contributions to Los Angeles and beyond.

This trip connects directly to our Unit of Inquiry by encouraging students to reflect on identity, heritage, and the many stories that shape who we are as individuals and as a community. It offers students the opportunity to explore how history, traditions, and cultural expressions continue to influence daily life and deepen our understanding of what it means to belong.
