ELEMENTARY

At Intiwasi, we focus on providing academic excellence and a top-tier bilingual education, while emphasizing socio-emotional learning to promote growth in all areas. Our supportive and nurturing environment encourages creativity and curiosity while valuing and respecting each individual. We believe that all students have the potential to become bilingual and biliterate, and our unique approach prepares them for a lifetime of critical thinking and success. Our language immersion program fosters an environment where students can freely express their ideas in two languages.

An Immersive Environment

Our students develop both oral and cognitive academic language in both English and Spanish while mastering grade-level knowledge and skills across all elementary content areas. Early exposure to two languages enhances problem-solving, reasoning, and communication skills, leading to elevated levels of academic and cognitive functioning. Research also shows that bilingual children have an easier time developing strong thinking skills, understanding math concepts and problems, increasing reading comprehension, and achieving higher levels of social-emotional competencies.

Dual-language immersion programs, are not designed to replace English with another language but to provide students with the opportunity to acquire a second language while maintaining their first language. In fact, research has shown that fully-implemented programs can create higher levels of bilingualism, and English learners in these models have been shown to score as well as or better than their peers in other programs on English tests. We believe that our approach prepares our students for a lifetime of success and opens doors to new opportunities for them.

Academic Programs

Foss Science

FOSS (Full Option Science System) is a research-based science curriculum for grades K-8 developed at the Lawrence Hall of Science, University of California, Berkeley. FOSS has evolved from a philosophy of teaching and learning that has guided the development of successful active-learning science curricula for more than 40 years. The FOSS Program bridges research and practice by providing tools and strategies to engage students and teachers in enduring experiences that lead to deeper understanding of the natural and designed worlds.

A Note on Testing

At Intiwasi, we are proud to exceed state standards in our academic approach. While we do not require our students to take state-mandated assessments as a private school, we believe that our rigorous curriculum and comprehensive instruction will prepare our students to succeed on any standardized test. Our curriculum is designed to challenge and inspire our students to reach their full potential, and we believe that this will equip them with the skills and knowledge needed to excel on any standardized test they may encounter in the future.
